about

This song comes from the Psalms (Psalm 95). It is the opening of Kabbalat Shabbat (the service that opens Shabbat) and it comes right after Yedid Nefesh (the poem, which is technically not a part of the liturgy). It is the beginning of six Psalms leading up to Lecha Dodi, one psalm for each day of the week leading up to Shabbat. So basically this psalm is Sunday. It’s our first step away from Shabbat after Shabbat, but it is also the first step towards the next Shabbat. This melody is upbeat and joyful, because this prayer is telling us to get moving! Prayer can’t happen where you are physically, spiritually, emotionally. You have to get ready. You have to prepare, to ready yourself to change and be changed. And it’s all written in the plural, because in Judaism prayer is a communal act, especially on Shabbat. And so we call out to each other, “Hey! Let’s go pray and sing together!” (Kind of like we do in Lecha Dodi Corning, which has the same opening root word).

lyrics
